President Donald Trump announced plans to "save The Great Lakes from
the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp" on Tuesday, March 10
Efforts have been underway for years to fight the spread of multiple species of invasive carp, which were initially imported from Asia and
escaped into Midwestern waterways
Experts announced in January that more than 100,000 pounds of carp had been removed from the Kansas River alone over the last four years
President Donald Trump is looking for an environmental win ahead of the midterm elections and seeking help from several major swing states.
Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday, March 10, saying that he was
working with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on "trying to save The Great
Lakes from the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp, which is rapidly taking over Lake Michigan, and all of the beautiful surrounds."
"I’ll be asking other Governors to join into this fight, including those of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New York and,
of course, the future Governor of Canada, Mark Carney, who I know will be happy to contribute to this worthy cause," Trump continued, taking one of
his favorite swipes at the Canadian prime minister after a year of
proposing that Canada could become a U.S. state.
"Separately, I am also working to save The Great Salt Lake, in Utah, which,
in a short period of time, if nothing is done, will have no water. This is
on top of everything else I am doing," he concluded. "Only 'TRUMP' CAN DO
IT! President DONALD J. TRUMP."

Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee
Carp removal efforts target multiple species of the invasive fish,
including silver, bighead and black carp. The fish were originally imported from Asia in the 1970s for aquaculture, and escaped into Midwestern
waterways, spreading rapidly. They are known for growing quickly, consuming massive amounts of food and crowding out native species that rely on the
same resources.
It's unclear if Trump's newly announced plan will be a part of ongoing
efforts to remove invasive carp from the Great Lakes, the Kansas River, the Cumberland and Tennessee River watersheds and more or a separate venture.

As one commenter noted, the management of nuisance species in public
waterways falls under the purview of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
(USACE), who have been working on methods to "manage and prevent the spread
of Asian carp" since 2020, according to a July 2025 memo.

In 2022 and 2023, USACE received $273.7 million in federal appropriations
for "an effort in the Chicago area to control the transfer of aquatic
invasive species, including Asian carp, from the Mississippi River basins
to the Great Lakes."
"Congress further authorized the Great Lakes and Mississippi River
Interbasin Study to evaluate methods to prevent aquatic invasive species transfer between the basins," the memo continued. "USACE and the states of Illinois and Michigan signed a project partnership agreement in July 2024
to begin construction of the project, then estimated to cost $1.15 billion. USACE awarded the project’s first construction contract on April 25, 2025." Related Stories

Carp removal efforts are also already years underway in Kansas, where
wildlife officials announced in January that more than 100,000 pounds of invasive Asian carp had been removed from the Kansas River since 2022.
The agency capped off 2025, its most successful year to date, by removing 36,863 pounds of fish — the highest annual total so far for the removal effort.
KDWP officials say removal will continue year-round and may expand further
as research and funding allow. They encouraged the public to help by never releasing invasive carp back into the water and by reporting sightings
outside known infested rivers.
