• Piece of shit iOS has absolutely zero privacy for God's sake

    From Andrews@andrews@spam.net to misc.phone.mobile.iphone,comp.mobile.ipad,comp.sys.mac.advocacy on Fri Nov 15 23:42:20 2024

I'm setting up an iPhone for someone and after setting it up without a login/password, she wants to add apps from the app store. Sigh.

I already was forced by Apple to set it up with a Wi-Fi access point, which isn't too bad as even Android tablets would need to have Wi-Fi access to be used (although only an iOS device *requires* it for the initial setup!).

This lack of privacy on an iOS device is simply astounding.
Yet Apple lies about privacy in their advertising.

Why don't the idiot consumers realize they're being lied to by Apple?
Anyway, it's an iPad so I'm stuck with the total loss of privacy.

So I'm at this moment creating an account which allows me to give bogus information for most of the data (which insists on a last name & DOB).

But the lack of privacy on an iOS device rears its ugly head with the verification process - which - as far as I can tell - requires your phone!
    <https://i.postimg.cc/nhG215Wb/IMG-0001.jpg>

    WTF?

    Doesn't Apple advertise privacy?
    Where is it?

Why is it that *every* other common consumer operating system can be set up without giving the mothership your phone - except Apple's POS iOS setup?

Is there a way to SKIP that privacy-robbing collection of your phone?

It's interesting that Apple trolls know NOTHING about Apple products.

FACT: Only Apple forces EVERYONE to give them their phone number.
Nobody else does that but Apple. Not Microsoft. Not Google. Just Apple.

So I called up Apple and asked why it's impossible to use an iPad without having to give the Apple mothership a valid phone number for them to abuse.

Apple said, effectively, most of its customers love having no privacy.

Specifically they said that the "find my" garbage requires the phone
number, so, they said it was to "protect me" even though I was rather clear that I will never need a "find my" mechanism in my life.

If I lose the iPad, so what.
I lose nothing but an iPad.

    Big deal.
I don't even have biometrics or a passcode on the thing.

    They can have it.
Anyway, the fact remains Apple is the only common consumer operating system vendor who requires your phone number just to set up your device for apps.

Even though there is no privacy on any Apple device, there was a secret way
to get the iPad set up with a new account not associated with another
    account. Sort of.

Betcha the Apple trolls don't know that secret.

It turns out that it's not possible to create a new iCloud account without calling Apple personally and giving them your phone number to verify.

Not if there is already an iCloud account set up with your Android phone.
It's impossible to do it from your iPad device. You must talk to Apple.

And then you must identify yourself to Apple's satisfaction.
Just to set up an iCloud account on the iPad.

Which proves there is no privacy with Apple products. None.
No other operating system vendor has that privacy robbing requirement.

    Not Google. Not Microsoft. Nobody.
    Just Apple.

All to make their walled-garden work.
That is, you trade your privacy to get the walled garden to work.

    Great deal.
    For Apple.

What *they* do, is they set up the Apple account on their side.
This can only happen if you call them & identify yourself to them.

Only *after* Apple creates the iCloud account, can you then set it up.
Even after they've created the iCloud account over the phone, they still require your phone number to verify that iCloud account on the iPad.

The trick is you can't do it with their iOS system prompts.
    Nope. Won't work.

You *must* do it through the email app.
    Go figure.

It's Apple so it doesn't have to make any sense.

In the end, you *can* create a new iCloud account but you have to trade
your privacy to do it with Apple products.

    Apple brazenly lies about privacy.
There is no privacy on Apple products.

I'm going to respond to this particular Apple troll, Tom Elam,
as if he owns the mentality of an adult. Is that OK with you Tom?

Since you called well-established facts "bullshit", what exactly are you claiming is "bullshit" since I provided all necessary details, including screenshots, proving Apple *requires* your personal phone number in order
to set up an iCloud account which is needed to download apps for the iPad.

Why do you Apple trolls call that "bullshit"?
Is it because you don't believe it?
If so, that means you're completely ignorant of how the walled garden
    works.

Or, is it because you don't like it?

Then you're just being an ignorant troll by claiming the earth is flat. Simply because you don't like that it's round.

The fact is only Apple forces you to trade your privacy for the privilege
of installing apps. Google doesn't do it. Microsoft doesn't either.

    Just Apple.
    That's a fact.

You can call that fact "bullshit", but then, as an adult, I ask why.

    Apple does not ask for

SSN, Medicare ID, date of birth, address, etc.

Huh? Nobody said they did. And yet, they do. Apple *requires* your
government ID whenever you stop logging into your iPad, which you Apple trolls are unaware that you're logging into the Apple servers every day.

Yes. You heard that correctly. Only Apple requires your government issue iD to unlock an iPad that Apple unilaterally bricked simply because you
stopped logging into it for two years (this happened on two different iPads!).

    <https://i.postimg.cc/Y9kkj19v/appleid12.jpg> Apple tracking server login

What's interesting is you Apple trolls know nothing about Apple.
Why don't you Apple trolls know anything about how Apple really works?

What evidence do you have that providing Apple a phone number
compromises your privacy? What evidence that the phone number
    compromises anything?

Huh? It's your phone number. Only you. Nobody else. If you don't understand that it compromises your privacy, then let me ask you why you think NOBODY BUT APPLE does this? Nobody. Not Google. Not Microsoft. Just Apple.

Do you Apple trolls understand anything at the level an adult should?

Why, Tom Elam, do you think only Apple requires your phone number in order
to install apps - when NOBODY else who makes an OS requires your privacy?

You never answer my questions. You don't have answers.

You make that claim without even realizing I know more about Apple than all of you Apple trolls combined do - since NONE of you even know that you're logging into Apple mainframe servers every single moment of every day of
the rest of your natural life. You don't know that. You think you're not.

    But you are.

This is not "another" troll. It is the same Arlen, making you dance
simply by changing its posting name.

Adding it to your killfile will not stop you feeding it. It will simply change its name when it wants you to feed it again.

I really don’t get why people continue to engage with such an obviously unhinged poster like Arlen. For one thing such engagement feeds his
    delusions of grandeur.

    Answering it feeds it.

May as well point that out to a brick wall as people will continue to
    engage this nymshifting trolling nutcase.

I recall decades ago posting to moderated groups where such abusive nutters would be banhammered on sight. Those were the good ole days of no nonsense moderators. Now groups like this devolve into a shitshow thanks primarily
to one or more bad actors and their multiple enablers.

That’s Arlen’s sole raison d'etre, smearing his feces across the group while self-appointed janitors keep trying to clean up after him.

No troll August worked in the main with only a few engaging it.

Anyway, face it, usenet as meeting point as it used to be is deader than
a doornail. Other (web based and other) social media has taken over.
