• Win11 Adverts

When I (reluctantly) upgraded to Windows 11, I was rather ruthless in
disabling and pruning any built-in services that Microsoft might use
to shove adverts for its services in my face. So I've been happily
advert free (at least on the OS level) for the past five months: no
apps secretly added to my start menu, no pleas to use Outlook or
OneDrive, no 'suggestions' pointing to Microsoft partners. Just
file-management and program launching and all the stuff an OS /should/
    do.

Until today, when a 'helpful' advert for 'XBox Wireless Controllers'
snuck into the Windows11 notification bar.

Fuck you, Microsoft. Marketing is inherently deceitful and I didn't
want any of it coming from my operating system; you need to be able to
TRUST the OS, and advertising works against that goal. You want to
place adverts, stick them on something you control (like your website)
and not on my fucking OS. And don't fucking override my choices NOT to
see the adverts just to shill your newest toy.

Now I have to recheck all my settings to see which one was changed by
some spurious non-deniable 'update'. Because that was something I
    wanted to do today.

Windows 11: Because Microsoft hates their customers.

I always kinda suspected that MS would ignore your settings, but
actually having it confirmed is worrying. The days of a plain Windows
    install is over..

I actually read somewhere that MS wants to add background removal to
Paint. As in, remove the background from a photograph and keep the
    subject.

Who the hell wants that from Paint? Their users got them to kill Paint 3D
and keep Paint around, and now they want to make Paint into "not Paint."

It's like they don't listen to their users at all! /s

Literally just use gimp. How are you so computer illiterate you don't understand that built in apps are supposed to be simple??

    b) Surprised Comment: It was quite unexpected to so many people are

    c) Observation Comment: I apparently hit a chord with my little rant

    d) Explanatory Comment: Nothing about this situation is new or
unexpected to me... it's not like I didn't realize until now MS/Win11
was shitty. Ignoring the end-users whims has been part and parcel of
MS policy for years and I knew it was just a matter of time before it
would happen. But nonetheless, whenever it does happen, even though I
fully expect it, I still get aggravated. Hence the rant.

    e) Newsgroup-Appropriate Comment: say, have you heard Bethesda
released a new RPG called "Starfield"?

    f) Purposefully Trolling Comment: I hear it's better than "Baldur's
    Gate 3" in every way;-)

Yup. I don't get it either. Paint is not going to become some killer

There have been various de-bloating type apps out there. I found this one
    very effective, helpful, and non-harmful:

    https://github.com/builtbybel/BloatyNosy

It aids greatly in removing bloatware, disabling adware, and tweaking
    privacy settings.

I doubt it's completely perfect, but it did better than I could do myself
in a short amount of time. I was used to trolling through all the settings
and other things revealed by SysInternals (now also more doubtful) to
    achieve similar effects.

    Two disclaimers:
    1. Read the docs.
    2. YMMV

    Hope it's helpful!

Thank you. However, as noted, I had already done that. My rant had
more to do with the fact that any such changes are temporary, because
Microsoft will re-implement any changes at their whim.

Which, again, isn't surprising. I knew that going into Windows 11 (and
Windows 10). But it's still annoying when it actually happens. ;-)

I can't speak directly to the BloatNosy tool above, but there are a
number of similar apps available, and I can't imagine using Windows11
without them. (Hell, I can barely tolerate Windows 11 /with/ them). So
thank you for the informational link, even if I've no use for it
    myself ;-)
