Found this while reading up about the 2024 reboot of Alone in the
Dark. It's a remake of the 1992 games, with higher-resolution
textures, improved models (more than 20 polygons per character!) and
    various QOL features.

    Github release:
    https://github.com/spacefarergames/AloneInTheDarkReHaunted/

    Video showing it off:

It's still a very rough and dated game; the fixed camera angles, the
clunky controls, the necessity for trial-n-error gameplay and all the save-scumming and deaths that requires. And while improved over the
pixel-mess from 1992, it's still not a good looking game (and it looks
to me as if some of the upscaled artwork used AI). Plus, you'll need
to have a copy of the original version to play this remaster (but for
that, you can get the first four games in the franchise for less than
a fiver now from Steam during the summer sale ;-)

Still, if you want to replay this old classic, this is probably the
best way to do it for anyone except those insisting on a 100% original experience.

I played its original demo on my IBM PS/2 model 30 286 10 Mhz PC back then. :)

You might need a /slightly/ more powerful computer for the ReHaunted
    version. ;-)

PS/2... did it use a Microchannel bus for its expansion cards?

Good find, thanks! Gotta say though it's still too dated looking for my taste. A friend recommended AITD: The New Nightmare; that may be a chore to get working under Win11 , but I'll look into it.

Visually, I find it... well, not good looking, but I can deal with it.
But the control scheme is terrible (it dates back to an era when you
had to manually select actions through a menu) and the game can be
unforgiving unless you know exactly what to do. Lots of instant-kill death-traps that make you reload from your last save just for opening
a door, and stuff like that.

I played "New Nightmare" back in... 2002? Not when it was brand new,
but not too long after that. My recollection was that it was, at best,
an average "Resident Evil" clone, with the usual terrible controls,
awful camera angles, and a not-very-interesting narrative. The best
part about the game was that each protagonist had their own unique
storyline. But even for a game of its era, it felt pretty dated and
    lacked charm.

Except for die-hard fans of the franchise, it's just not a game I'd
recommend. Certainly I found the recent 2024 game (with all its
faults) a far superior experience; the 2001 game isn't anywhere in the
same league. IMHO and YMMV and all the rest applying, of course.

Ok, I'll take your advice there and skip it. Still planning on RE7, Doom DAges, & The Room for this month

Before you take my advice on anything, maybe find a long-play on
YouTube and watch it for a while. One of my biggest complaints with
the game was its tank controls, and you don't really get how annoying
that is from a video. But it'll give you an idea of what the game is
    like overall, anyway.

    One such video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuXDH-SUbmQ (no
commentary. Skip ahead to get a better idea of the in-game gameplay as
opposed to the bits at the start which are slow tutorial levels).

It's not that I think "AITD: New Nightmare" is an absolutely terrible
game. If you enjoy those sorts of games (and some people do) then go
for it. I mean, visually it still holds up alright. But its gameplay
just isn't very novel and its characters and storyline aren't all that engaging. I'd say overall it's low-average compared to other games,
but that rises to 'average' amongst other Resident-Evil clones of the
era. But I say that as someone who does /not/ like the Resident
Evil-style of adventure/horror, so take my opinion with that
    consideration.

I just think there are better games out there to spend your time on.

I just started playing that Doom again and am having a good time with
it. A perfect shooter and not many stupid jumping puzzles so far,
like the last version. Only 3 hours into it so far. I can't remember
why I quit playing it. Looks good at it's max resolution too.
