• CRAP Poll #23: Back to the arcade!

It's been a little while since we did one of these ridiculous things
(that ridiculous thing being one of these Completely Random And
Pointless polls!). Let's get back into the habit, shall we?

    #

Here's an easy question for you:

When was the last time you played a coin-operated arcade game?

    5c) It's been so long ago I can't even remember (the '80s)
10c) Not since Street Fighter 2 was big (the '90s)
25c) It was some time ago (the 2000s)
    50c) A little while back (the 2010s)
75c) Just a few years ago (the 2020s)
    $1.00) I've never played a coin-op video arcade
$1.25) I'm playing one right now!
    $1.50) I own a coin-op video-arcade!

    #

    Here's a dime; I haven't played since the early 90s. Or thereabouts;
it's hard for me to remember. And even then, I'm pretty sure the games
I played dated back to sometime in the '80s. I was a bit more active
in the arcades in the early 80s (maybe even in the '70s?) but I
quickly migrated to home machines, partly because I disliked
paying-per-play, and partly because the types of games I enjoyed
    weren't available on coin-ops

[Although, can you imagine: coin-op Zork? That would have
    been something to see!]

By the 90s, the only time I 'visited' one was if it happened to be in
the vicinity and there was nothing else to do (e.g., waiting in the
theatre for a movie to start)... and even then I rarely felt the urge
to plop in a quarter of six for the privilege of playing. Besides, by
that time the arcades -and its games-- were fully aimed at the
younger-set, and I no longer fit in with that crowd. So neither the
games nor the atmosphere were something enjoyable to me. The few times
I came across one and wandered its aisles (or kerplunked a quarter),
it was more from nostalgia for lost youth than any real appreciation
of the games. And these days, if I've any desire to revisit the
experiences of yesteryear, I'm happier using emulation than treading
    those sticky floors.

What about you? Do the arcades still hold appeal to you? When was the
last time you played a coin-op arcade?

$1.25 About 1.5 months ago I walked into the mall arcade, looked all
around and turned up my nose at the pathetic Street Fighter 2 machine
they were carrying. The RGB signals were half-muted, with everything in
a pale blue-purple. I chose not to insert a coin and it was good enough
to qualify as a play. Sadly Joust and Ms. Pacman couldn't get my
interest either. I fully expected to spend at least a dollar walking in
but I remember those curators from 7 years ago yelling at customers that
they were rough on the machine and stuff. Cool it, bros. You're not the
    gurus you think you are.

Last summer, I happened to be at a place that had a retro arcade room,
complete with glow in the dark carpet, a surprisingly decent variety
of cabinets, etc... so I spent a few dollars pissing away some time on
them, mostly because I don't know when these will disappear
    completely.

So to answer the question about the appeal....

...yes the nostalgia of the environment still has some appeal but some
of these games, and particularly their screens had seen better days.
Fading or damaged screens, cabinets that have gotten schmutzed up or
just had a hard life without proper dedication to restoration, etc.
are something that reflects today's state of arcade gaming rather than
taking me back to the feeling of how arcade gaming was back then. At
the same time I appreciated that each of the machines only took a
quarter, I wondered if each game session cost the owner more in
operational electricity than the 25 cents of revenue it was
generating, never mind long term parts sourcing and replacement.

I would have enjoyed my time there more if these games had bright,
crisp CRT displays and pristine feeling controls the way they did back
in the 80's. But it was kind of cool and scratched a nostalgia itch.

Yes, but for fun and flashbacks. The real machines I played was back in

moved away. We played The Simpsons all the way together! Ha. Sheesh, I

For sure I remember Sega Rally 2 and it's from '98. It's probably the
last arcade I have played a lot of. But '90s or 2000s? Not sure.

For the vague and random memories department, I think I've tried the
Ferrari 355 Challenge once or twice. It's from '99 but I think that
trial was somewhat later, so maybe the quarter then or maybe half-dollar decade.

Come to think of it, I've actually visited an arcade museum! I can't
remember what I played there though. the games were kinda busy and I
didn't have all day so I played whatever was free instead what I
    wanted. That was the 2010s.

    $1.50) I own a coin-op video-arcade!

I've at least thought about this but never got around to it. The old
school Yamma cabinet kind which would've enabled more than one game by
    changing boards and possibly controls.

What about you? Do the arcades still hold appeal to you? When was the
last time you played a coin-op arcade?

From my vague memories it seems I've played arcades every decade since
the 70s, except for the current one. Still some time to fix that :)

I never could get into pinball. It wasn't the mechanics that bothered
me --I never got very good at the game, but I wasn't completely
hopeless, and I knew if I kept at it I'd probably get better-- so much
as the point of it all. Moving the ball up and down just to accumulate
more points just to keep playing became boring really quickly. But
it's possible I just gave up on the medium too quickly.

But I'm the same way with video games too. I need story and structure
to keep my attention. Playing for points --whether its pinball or
footie or Pong or Quake deathmatch-- could never keep me engaged that
long. I've no problem with other people enjoying that sort of
gameplay, but I always wanted something different.

In the beginning, the novelty and technological wonder of the arcades
were enough to keep me at least marginally invested, but by the mid
80s it was pretty obvious that a lot of the games there were just
repeating the same patterns, and the graphical wonder just wasn't
enough to keep me there. Meanwhile, personal computers offered me
storied worlds --whether in adventures like "Zork", role-playing with
"Ultima" or even the strategy of "Ancient Art of War"-- that gave me
reasons beyond the accumulation of points to keep playing.

I think the last time I went by myself though, I was dropping off my

wife called to pick her up. I was the only one there on a weekday morning.

I don't remember most of what I played, but I do remember the Guitar
Hero was the most fun of those I did play. It wasn't enough to get me
to buy the console game though, they and the controller guitar are
    expensive.

I also missed "I own my very own arcade cabinet at home" (which I

Then again, maybe my farcical "I own a video arcade" option was
    inclusive enough.

I very purposefully avoid the emulation option. The poll was all about
    playing on actual hardware.

I've read that there's been a sligh resurgence in arcades over the
past few years; nothing near the popularity of the 80s (or even the
2000s) but some few actual new arcades are being built. They tend to
be a bit more upscale and aimed more at adults than teens though (not
unlike what they were at the very start, in the 70s); a place where
you go for a few drinks and play games on the side. I suspect they're
playing off the nostalgia factor more than any real desire for people
to play the games. In fact, the few I've heard of all set the machines
to free-play and make their cash off of entry-fees or drink sales.

I haven't been to any of these nu-Arcades, though. Nor have any real
    desire to visit.

Although maybe if they had those rockin' Battletech arcade cabinets. I
always wanted to try one of those ;-)

To be truthful, I'm not sure how much fun I'd have with them these
days. The in-game visuals have, apparently, not fared very well over
the years and the actual cabinets are apparently aging as well. It's a
shame Microsoft dropped the whole concept as soon as they purchased
the Battletech license, because I can just imagine what a modern
version might be like, with giant wrap-around screens, ultra-realistic
graphics and motion-control. Although supposedly a lot of the effect
of the original cabinets came from their sound (and the overwhelming
number of controls!) more than the actual visuals displayed on the
    screen.

The biggest reason I never tried them when the cabinets were still
around is that I didn't know of any place nearby where they could be
played. But even if I had, I'm not sure I would have wanted to squeeze
myself into a tiny cabinet just vacated by a sweaty teen ;-P

Here's an easy question for you:

When was the last time you played a coin-operated arcade game?

    5c) It's been so long ago I can't even remember (the '80s)
10c) Not since Street Fighter 2 was big (the '90s)
25c) It was some time ago (the 2000s)
    50c) A little while back (the 2010s)
75c) Just a few years ago (the 2020s)
    $1.00) I've never played a coin-op video arcade
$1.25) I'm playing one right now!
    $1.50) I own a coin-op video-arcade!

    Here's a dime; I haven't played since the early 90s. Or thereabouts;
it's hard for me to remember.

I think when I was a kid there were birthday parties held at arcades, so
I'm going to go with 50c?

coin-op arcades are bad. Either they all cost $1.00 per, or they are
faded and/or broken yet cost the usual quarter.

What I kind of like are these nickel arcades, there's one in the south
city here. I plan on going once I settle in.
