The other day I posted about a name that used to inspire dread in
games (or at least, gamers on Usenet), famed for his diatribes
whenever somebody criticized his sci-fi opus. (No I'm not going to
say the name). But there's another polarizing figure who gained infamy
amongst gamers back in the late 90s/early 2000s; somebody who we'd all
hoped we'd seen the backside of back in 2008, after his last
gaming-related masterpiece: the cinematic 'classic' that was "Far
    Cry".

Yes, I'm talking about Uwe Boll. And he's just announced that he's
making a sequel to his epic 2003 "House of the Dead" movie, to be
called "23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead".* (In case you can't
tell, it takes place 23 years after the first game... and is set in a
castle). That's the official description of the movie so far. Thank
god they cleared it up because the title left me very confused ;-)

In fact, Boll's come out of retirement to make this masterpiece.
Apparently he was annoyed that somebody else was making a new movie
based on "House of the Dead" and wanted to show how to really make
soulless schlock. Also, he's optioned for yet another "Alone in the
Dark" film... a franchise which has dug itself into so deep a hole
that maybe even a Uwe Boll film might look like a good idea.

As if this timeline wasn't weird and awful enough.

Just like you are hanging on for a real James Bond, many gamers are
hanging on for a real Alone in the Dark. The original video game was a timeless classic and must be revisited.

I never forgave him for Blood Rayne. A movie with so little of
discernible happenings, I could've got more from watching random clips
    from all movies.

discernible happenings, I could've got more from watching random clips
    from all movies.

I don't remember if I saw Blood Rayne. I've seen a handful of his
flicks, but I found them so bad and generic that I have a hard time
keeping them apart. The only one I am confident I saw was the "Dungeon
Siege" movie, but I think I also saw "Far Cry", "Alone in the Dark"
and maybe one or two others ("House of the Dead", maybe? Or "Alone in
the Dark" or "Bloodrayne" are other possibilities). But I honestly
    can't recall for sure.

The thing about Boll movies is that they were bad... but not in the so-bad-they're-actually good. Movies of the latter type usually have
something going for them; they're often passion products created with
too little skill or resources, but you can tell the director had a
vision. Boll's flicks have none of that. They're dull, badly written,
poorly filmed and lacking any imagination or novelty. Taken as a
whole, they're fascinating in how unbelievably terrible they all are,
but individually they're not worth watching even to laugh at them.

Still, in his heyday it worked... if only because nobody expected
games based on video-games to be any good anyway. So it was possible
(with the help of loopholes in tax laws) to make a profit off of a
movie like that. But nowadays, there have been numerous quality titles
based on video-games, and gaming IPs actually have value nowadays.
Plus, the movie production costs have skyrocketed, and that tax
loophole has been closed. So I'm not sure that his sort of schlock
    filmmaking will work anymore.
