• So, it's Star Wars day...

Somehow May 4th became Star Wars day* and the Marketeers have seized
upon it. So now we all have to play Star Wars games today. I'm pretty
    sure it's a law now.

So, if you had to play a Star Wars game today, which one would it be?

Me, I think I'd just spin up "Dark Forces" again; it's always good for
a quick game. Although I admit, I have been thinking about replaying
"Star Wars: Outlaws", although the Ubisoftness of that game does fill
    me with dread.

But odds are I won't play any Star Wars games today. I'm not much of a Force-worshipper anyway. I always aligned more with the Sith. ;-)

My second reminder today, the first from my wife that today is May the
Forth. I've been playing The Surge 2.

I suppose if I had to pick one SW game today I'd go with Jedi Knight:
Jedi Academy. I have vague fond memories of playing it, and it's been
long enough I don't remember it well enough. That or probably the The
    Old Republic (The MMO.)

While I love KotOR, I played it too recently and gave up halfway
through, it just didn't hold up anymore.

KOTOR is still a good game. It is a bit dated nowadays; not just in
visuals and it's (relatively) limited scope, but because Bioware
overused the formula (meet threat, gather the gang, do side missions
to level up, story twist!!!, end-game) in all their subsequent games
(and because it was so successful, all their competitors used that
formula too). So what seemed so fresh and innovative back in 2003 now
    feels predictible and old-hat.

I still think it holds up fairly well, though. I'd certainly rank it
higher than "Star Wars: Outlaws". My biggest problem with the game
--and the main reason I don't play it anymore-- isn't anything to do
with the game itself, and everything to do with the fact that I've
played it so many times that I know it inside and out. I know where to
go and what to do and what will happen when I do. It's one of those
games I need to let sit untouched for twenty years so I can come upon
    it fresh again.

I finished it during a Christmas week, and then sold it

I fired up Jedi Academy. I went through the 5 newbie missions, then the
first mission after on hoth, it hung up on me on the cutscene at the end
2x, and I gave up there. It'd also hung up at one point on a previous cutscene but going from a save it went through on a second time. It was
fun, better than I was expecting of something that old. And it had LUKE SKYWALKER in it!

I might try to fix the issue with the cutscene, I'm not sure at this point.

It does have some stuff I don't like but minor gripes besides the bugs.
save points are erratic, some happening frequently together, and on the
rail mission they're non-existant. Fortunately you can make your own
saves. Death seems random, Falling off cliffs, even dying to blaster
fire where sometimes I go through a mob of like 10 enemies with narry a scratch and other times I get shot repeatedly by someone with a wookie crossbow until dead. The hidden paths are annoying, there's one I
missed where you're supposed to drag a block which is infront of an
elevator, which of course doesn't look like an elevator, which I had to
look up. And the sheer number of mobs you have to go through for each
    mission gets a bit repetitive.

Yeah, I only played KOTOR1 once. Actually, I saved before the final
mission or whatever it was because I was on the light side borderline to
the dark side. So, I just replay the last mission when switching side
    from my saved game.

In some ways, SW:TOR /is/ KOTOR3. It continues (parts) of the story
and its gameplay isn't entirely different from the single-player
    games.

Should I even bother with KOTOR2?

I'd say no, but I didn't like the sequel that much. Some people swear
by it. It's much more 'grey-on-grey' than typical Star Wars fare.
Myself, I've no problem with more sophisticated and nuanced stories...
but I don't think it fits in well with the Star Wars mythos (a
universe that, after all, by its very nature is divided into black and
white). The mechanics and formula of the series don't work well with grey-on-grey morality either.

Not to mention all the bugs and cut-content that --even with all the
efforts of the fans to fix things-- still makes the game feel hollow
in comparison to the first game.

To be fair, in the storyline you are just a nobody outlaw and your
hoverbike is a typical civilian vehicle, so it makes sense you don't
have a cannon mounted to it.

[Of course, that ignores the fact that your spaceship is
a fucking battleship, and that you can't upgrade your bike
if you want, or that nobody bats an eye that you're carrying
an arsenal of guns and grenades everywhere... but its not
that unusual that your BIKE is unarmed ;-)]

And its not as if you can't shoot people from your bike with your
pistol from the start (this may have been changed from when the game
released, though... but in the current version you can zoom about on
your hover bike and take potshots at nearby folk as soon as you get
    the vehicle).

So that particular example isn't the best... but I get what you mean.

But what I don't like about the game is more its storyline and
characters. It captures the look and feel of the franchise setting
very well... but it limits you to a single role, with the typical
awful Ubisoft dialog and story structure. That limitation, coupled
with the just-barely-above-adequate gameplay, and its awful "giant map
with no purpose to its excess size except to hide collectibles"
world-design (another Ubisoft hallmark) makes this game average at
best... and really not worth it except for weirdo Star Wars die-hards
    (like, sadly, myself).

It's not a terrible game, "Star Wars: Outlaws"... but it could have
been so much more if it had been developed by anybody else but
    Ubisoft.

When I played (last year?) I needed to charge up "Adrenaline" and then I
could trigger "Adrenaline rush" and could shoot from a bike a couple of

more of a mix with a QTE and bullet time, time would slow down for a few seconds which let you choose your targets and then have a QTE-like
sequence were Kay single shots each target.

I have a vague memory this may have been changed in a patch since. Yep,
title update 1.6, 15 May 2025 added free firing from speeder bike. I
assume they probably kept the Adrenaline rush thing since it offers insta-kills.

Oh yeah, I think I recall that from my first play-through. I never
really used it much (or the newer 'shoot while driving' mechanic)
because I just found it easier to either just outrun the enemies, or
    dismount and headshot them.

But yeah, I'd have loved to be able to hijack an Imperial military
bike and do like Luke and Leia in Return of the Jedi. Instead, I was
stuck on my space-moped like those goons from the "Book of Boba Fett".
