• Those scary, scary video-games

So, Time Magazine (did you even know they were still in business?)
posted an article about how once again fingers are pointing at those
scary, evil, ultra-violent video-games as the root of all problems in
    the USA.*

And I mention it here not because it really says anything new (they
article itself is skeptical of the claims) but because it does have a
rundown of how often video-games have been used as a boogeyman by
various groups: from 1976 when arcade-cabinet game "Death Race" scared
people because you ran over gremlin sprites, to the Reagan
Administration calling video games one of the 'top dangers to
children', and further on to the better known scaremongering about
    "Doom" and "Night Trap".

Given the nature of this newsgroup, I don't think the article's
conclusion --that USA needs to look more deeply at itself to find the
source of its problems rather than looking at the superficial and
unfounded worries about video-games-- will surprise anyone. But if you
want a fairly clear listing of how far back this video-game alarmism
goes, the article is a useful starting point.

These days I'm surprised when I learn _any_ print publication is still

Exactly. I thought Time was gone.

I did not read the article but from the title alone, it sounds like
Time is not blaming video games for anything negative.

I mean, if I'd have given it any thought I'd have remembered Time
Magazine is a going concern; after all, being on the cover of Time
Magazine thing is still some people covet. But it's been such a long
time since I've seen the magazine that, when an article of theirs was referenced, the first thing that popped through my head was, "Wait,
    Time Magazine still exists?"

Maybe I just need to lurk around magazine display shelves in stores
again. You know, like the cool kids did back in the day ;-)

I did not read the article but from the title alone, it sounds like

No, it was a surprisingly fair and nuanced article (I mean, for Time
Magazine. It isn't a periodical renowned for the depth of its writing,
after all). The gist of their argument was that pointing the finger at
whatever the latest boogeyman is --video games, comics, rock and roll,
Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, whatever-- is just an excuse not to
look more seriously at what is _really_ causing the problem. Which
isn't really a new idea, but it is an unusual stance for a major
periodical written for the general public. And, like I said, the
listing of the many times video games have been used as a scapegoat in
times past is a helpful reminder of its pointlessness for when it
    comes up again.

...Especially since we all know that the real thing behind the
corruption of our youth is Pogs. Oh sure, some might think that's a long-forgotten fad, but those cursed plastic disks are still lurking
about, ruining the innocent minds of our children to this day.

    SLAM.

    ;-)

So what you are saying is that video games have reduced Time's market
and that's wny they are going after them? I mean first you have people
playing video games then you have people reading kindle pretty soon no
    one's reading the journals.
