What the hell is Deckard, you ask?

Why, it's the code-name for Valve's next VR headset, reportedly
entering mass production for released by end-of-year.*

Is it true? I've no idea, although there have been strong hints that a
new VR headset was in development so it seems quite possible (the only
real question is 'when', not 'if'). Valve has been fairly bullish on
the whole VR thing, and while I consistently think the whole VR thing
is still just a gimmick, I can't fault them for continuing to push it.
Not only does it help differentiate their service (and make them a
viable competitor should Microsoft turn (more) evil, but they're
really the only manufacturer of stand-alone VR headsets for PC.

Still... rumors are the asking price for the thing will be $1200USD,
which -if true- will probably kill the thing from the start. Oh, there
will always be the fanboys who grab one, but PCVR will never take off
if the price-of-entry is that high. (The current Valve VR headset goes
for $500 USD for the base model, and $1000 USD for the deluxe set with
all the goodies... and it's still not that common amongst gamers).

We'll see how it goes. I'm unlikely to buy it but maybe this new
device will be so ground-breaking that it will finally usher in the
Age of VR that has been heralded as being almost upon us since 1995.
    ;-)

Still... rumors are the asking price for the thing will be $1200USD,

I'm only interested if it gives a significantly better PCVR visual experience than the Index, which, though it improved hand controllers and
had higher framerate and resolution, actually had worse optical quality from using LCD instead of OLED, and I found it even bulkier than the original
Vive. If they choose a simple LED display again with its terrible black levels, that would be a deal breaker for me. Basically I'm demanding a highend device, or what's the point of a high price point?
