• Must... Resist... (Alien: Rogue Incursion Evolved Edition)

So, "Alien: Rogue Incursion Evolved Edition" is out. Anyone wanna
start taking bets on how long I last before buying it?

On the one hand, it's an Alien game, and I'm a sucker for that
franchise. This despite the fact that the various games based on that
series have had an extremely rocky road; there have been some truly
great games (e.g., "Alien: Isolation"), a lot of mediocre ones (like
"Alien³"), and some awful ones ("Alien Trilogy"). Not to mention
"Colonial Marines", which was so bad its publisher got sued over it.

But when the games work, they just work. The titular alien is one of
the best horror villains around, and it works very well in a
video-game; strong enough to be a challenging threat, but still
believable when you defeat it. Its used-future sci-fi setting is
recognizable and relatable too. So it's no wonder I'm drawn again and
    again to the video games.

    But on the other hand...

"Rogue Incursion EE" is a port of a VR game. VR games themselves
usually are sub-par gaming experiences, relying almost entirely on the
hook of the underlying virtual-reality technology to make them more
exciting. Take away the VR and you're usually left with a mediocre
title at best. Based on the trailers, "Rogue Incursion" doesn't seem
to stray far from this formula. It's visuals look dated already (I'm
sure they're much more impressive in VR) and the gameplay looks fairly
humdrum; honestly, in that regard it doesn't look any more impressive
than "Colonial Marines", with the AI specifically looking
    underwhelming.

It's just released today too, so it's going at full price now as well.
I don't like buying GOOD games at full price, much less games with
    such a spotty history.

Still... shooting xenos; it's hard to resist. I mean, it's inevitable
that I'll _eventually_ get the game; the question is how long before
that happens. Will I be able to resist?

Place your bets! 1 Internet Point per wager! Winner takes the lot!

    a) Who do you think are you kidding? You've already bought
the game before you posted this message.

    b) You'll have the game in your library by end of day.

    c) I give it a week, tops, before you crumble

    d) You'll make it to the first sale (regardless of how
paltry the discount) before you buy

    e) I have faith in you. You'll wait until at least a
    40% sale

    f) If you get it when it's above $10USD I'll eat my hat

    g) You'll get it as part of some bundle where the
overall price is just a few dollars

    h) You'll actually listen to common sense (and read
the reviews) and not get the game at all.

Somebody flag this post so we can get back to it in six months and
    divvy out the winnings ;-)

I'm surprised they didn't release this when Earth TV show premiered. I
guess the game wasn't ready. I still need to play Isolation game. :(

Have you so little faith in me? I mean, do I seem like the sort of
person who has thousands of games in their library added willy-nilly
for the most ridiculous of reasons? Me?!? ;-)

I'm surprised they didn't release this when Earth TV show premiered. I
    guess the game wasn't ready.

Yeah, I have to believe that was the intended plan but development
issues intervened. Although, honestly, "Alien Earth" was such a
disappointment --especially for fans of the Aliens franchise*-- that
it probably benefitted the developers by releasing afterwards.

I still need to play Isolation game. :(

I'm a fan of the game, but be aware:
    a) it's scary as shit
    b) it goes on forever

    * the titular alien had maybe 20 minutes screen time in the ~8 hours
of the show. It was very much an after thought to a show focused more
on the cyborgs/robots aspect of the franchise.

How long? I thought it was a short game. :(

The main campaign is... oh, I dunno, ten to fifteen hours? But it
feels longer because it keeps going on after it climaxes. It reminded
me of those Lord of the Ring movies, where Frodo defeats Sauron by
throwing the ring into Mt. Doom, but the movie goes on for another 45
    minutes after that.

It's been a while since I last played, but I seem to recall there were
two or three places the game _could_ have stopped prior to its actual
(rather disappointing) end, but just decided to keep going. It made
the last leg of the game something of a grind.

    IMHO, obviously.

But up to that point, the game was excellent. And --if you allow
yourself to settle in the mood the game is trying to present-- really,
really creepy. The xeno is unpredictibly good at stalking you.

    Too much falling action/resolution?

Wasn't the amazing ai of the enemy a major selling point in the orig?

Sorry. I definitely shouldn't mention that it actually was Gollum who
destroyed the ring, by biting off Frodo's ring finger and then
subsequently falling into the volcano, nor should I mention the giant
eagles who swooped in to rescue Frodo and Samwise from the exploding
mountain. I certainly shouldn't regale you with tales of how Sam and
Frodo were heralded as heroes, how they triumphantly returned to the
Shire, and how -in the fullness of time- Frodo left Middle Earth with
the Elves to sail to Valinor in the west. ;-)

The AI is pretty good... largely because it's less pattern-based than
the AI used in other games. You can't rely on using the same tricks on
it over and over again, and it appears unpredictably as you scurry
around Sevastapol Station. It gives a really good impression that it
    is learning all of your tricks. But it doesn't do it in an unfair way;
the AI might put the xeno in your general area, but it never knows
EXACTLY where you are, so it has to hunt you down, and it does so with predictible and fair rules*.

It's not perfect, it's not something you can't, if you put your mind
to it, game to your advantage, but it's still one of the better
examples of AI in the genre.

    * with one sole exception. It _always_ knows if you are right behind
it, and will react immediately if that's the case. I always felt that
was a bit unfair; it should either sometimes _not_ know, or react
    slower
