Heh. I just took this one from Spalls. I doubt anyone other than me
wants this old obscure game and so now someone is going to take it
    just to prove me wrong.

    Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace

[Is it wrong that I could ROT13 decrypt the title of
the game in my head? ;-)]

I dislike hating on the game. Like I said, it had a lot of interesting
ideas. You were captain of a spelljammer (a magical flying boat that
travels in outer space, for those not familiar with the franchise) and
could do a lot of usual "Elite"-type stuff: trading, combat,
exploring. There was a Gold-box style quest too. And it's hard to
dislike the setting: it's D&D in space!

[It's got talking hippo-men (with a culture fashioned
after imperial Britain!), mile-long space-dragons and fleets
of brain-eating monsters. What's not to like?!?]

Pirates of Realmspace definitely has its heart in the right place and
I think the /potential/ was there for a great game. But everything
about it felt so clunky, especially compared to its contemporaries,
that few people played it for long. I'm sure, if you're dedicated
enough, you can have a good time with the game /despite/ its flaws...
I'm just not sure it's worth the effort.

That said, my personal opinions on the game are based on maybe ten
hours of playing over the last thirty years. It's a game I've started
and restarted numerous times and never could get very far into (it
certainly doesn't have the easiest learning curve or does anything to
ease the player into the game... like telling them what the fuck they
should be doing). But reviews of the game were generally quite poor,
so I don't think my experience was uncommon.

Still, I'd never suggest somebody not try it if they have the chance.
You probably won't like it... but it may just be the game for you.

    Yes, it's a different "code".

    See: <10aloa1$105gj$1@dont-email.me>

    But basically:
