• Android 16 QPR1 (aka the shiny bits)

    From Andy Burns@usenet@andyburns.uk to comp.mobile.android on Wed Sep 3 20:53:58 2025

It's been a long time coming, after the Android 16 update itself felt
trivial, we (Pixel owners that is) finally get the Material 3 Expressive
    UI update.

The usual sites (9to5google, android police, android authority) have all
got summaries of the what's new ... mine's just about to reboot.

I like it. Makes my Pixel 9 Pro feel a little smoother.

Same on my 8a, like 'project butter' all over again.

    what's new

One thing I've just noticed, which I haven't heard anyone else mention throughout all the beta versions is the "Phone Info" screens, accessed
by dialling *#*#4636#*#* has a to "v2" screen, as well s the original
"v1", the V2 looks like they're part way through giving it a GUI wrapper.

I don't really like the new "Material 3 Expressive" - but unfortunately,
it got installed to my Pixel 6a as part of a regular update and now I
    can't go back.

The only thing which is better now: the quick setting tiles in the
notification drawer can now be resized to use less space. But nearly
everything else got worse - transparency effects, things take up more
space, fonts are worse, colors are worse...

Well M3E is effectively android 16.1, you could reload android 16, but
then you'd have to never upgrade again.

Font sizes and colours are more easily changeable now, are you sure you
can't find combinations that suit you?

I talk about the *fonts* not the *size* of it.

And the colours are not changeable at all - I can only choose either a
color palette based on the background image or *one* accent color from a palette of fixed colors, so everything looks greenish or blueish or
similar. That's exactly as it was in Android 16 before - but the old
"Material You" design worked much better for me.

As far as I know, it's still Roboto font, probably in a slightly heavier weight for a sort of 'plump' look?

Had to check for updates manually to get it. Both before and after, I
wish the date and day of week on the lock-screen were bigger, so, like
the time, I could read them without glasses.

Whatever it is, it looks worse for me and I don't understand, why you
    can not even change it.

And today I also found a new bug: the name of the mobile provider, which
is displayed when you open the navigation drawer, is always written in
black, even in dark mode - so you can read it at all then. And of course
there is no setting for this.

Also with Android 16 and "Material Expressive" the date and day of week
are still very small and you can not change this, only the size of the
    clock itself.

Accessibility or useful settings are not important, only a different
    look :-(.

Here, the provider is always in white. so white on black in dark mode
and white on mid-grey in light mode, readable in both cases.

One thing which does look odd to me is the new battery icon if you don't
have %age turned on, it's just a lozenge shaped blob.
