We picked up the FreeWrite Traveler a year or so ago, which looks like it's the same basic idea, thinking it would help our teen with distraction free writing. I was pretty interested in it myself for the same reason.

The Freewrite, at anyrate didn't really live up to it's promise, its just very slow and I can outtype the screen refresh by 5-10 characters, making it pretty miserable to use.

You could just log into a text console on a Linux laptop and run a
    text editor like Emacs full-screen.
