    More than 8 bits per pixel component.

    For as long as I've been using it, better than thirty years, the image
    format and many of the tools have supported up to 16 bits per component.

    Netpbm has supported this longer than an alpha channel. (But earlier
    versions supported using a second image as an alpha.)
