• Doctor Who

From Ed Vance@1:2320/100 to Mike Powell on Fri Sep 30 22:37:02 2016
    Howdy! Mike,

I've only seen the first Eight Doctors on my TV Set.

I've seen the First Seven Doctor Who Series on my old analog tv set and
saw the Eighth Doctor on a Special (on the ABC TV Network iirc).

That was before the TV Stations were 'encouraged' to start broadcasting in Digital Mode.

Digital TV works fairly fine when the Weather is calm, but during storms
it acts different than a Analog TV signal did.

I got 2 Digital TV Convertor Box Coupons from the U.S. Government when
they offered them, and have the convertors connected in between the
    Antenna and each Set.

So far Digital Over The Air TV has cost me $20.00 USD, but each TV Station
is broadcasting other sub channels, so I'm getting to see Shows from other
TV Networks, one of which has Doctor Who.

I detest wanting to pay a Cable TV Company to watch the current Doctor Who shows on the BBC Channel, because of the many other hundreds of Channels
they carry on the cable that I don't care to watch.

I don't want to pay for the priviledge to switch to another TV Channel
or to Turn the set OFF.

Some of what I've read on Wikipedia about the later Doctor Who shows makes
me think they are not as good as the older series shows that I watched.

WBNA TV 21.4 has the Retro TV Network, and currently I'm watching the
Doctor Who shows with the Third Doctor for one hour Monday- Friday.

On Saturday Retro TV has Doctor Who scheduled for two hours, currently with
the Sixth Doctor, but WBNA only carries 1 1/2 hour of Doctor Who that day
and has a Sportcast during the last 30 minute segment.

Six and a Half Hour is better than no Doctor Who at all.

One thing I've noticed when the titles for the Third Doctor are shown at
the Beginning and End of the show is that as the colored lines are
changing shape, at one point the shape looks like a Storm Trooper
    Helmet briefly.

If You can watch WBNA in Frankfort, KY, see if You notice what I 'think'
I'm seeing when the show starts up.

    You know how I am..............

it acts different than a Analog TV signal did.

    Ed,
Yeah, and over a distance, like Louisville to Frankfort, or even Lexington to Frankfort, the digital signals deteriorate so badly they are usually unwatchable. I used to be able to pull in all Louisville stations, all Lexington stations, and even one from Cincinnati. Ironically, when they
first went digital, some of the stations were available because they were on UHF (the analog was still using their VHF "spot"). Now that analog is gone
on those VHF stations have gone VHF for digital, I have no TVs that
    pull anything via antenna.

From what I can tell, digital was no real improvement for most of us at all. The only thing it allowed was for the government to narrow the band used by
TV so that they could sell the remainder for other uses.

WBNA TV 21.4 has the Retro TV Network, and currently I'm watching the
Doctor Who shows with the Third Doctor for one hour Monday- Friday.

There used to be another subchannel network there in Louisville that also carried the older 30-minute episodes. I can't remember which network it was, though. I happened to see it on TV while visiting relatives up there a year
or so ago. It was not Retro TV but a network I had not heard of. It was the first time I had seen episodes from any of the "original run" series, and
    they were pretty good.

I keep my eyes out just to see if any of the other subchannel networks we do get here on cable (Me, Antenna, and one other) carry Dr Who but, so far, if they do I have missed it.

One thing I've noticed when the titles for the Third Doctor are shown at
the Beginning and End of the show is that as the colored lines are
changing shape, at one point the shape looks like a Storm Trooper
    Helmet briefly.

They may very well do so. Over the years, they have probably had some characters that look like a Storm Trooper. I am not sure what the early Cybermen looked like, for example. :)

If You can watch WBNA in Frankfort, KY, see if You notice what I 'think'
I'm seeing when the show starts up.

Actually, I know I said I used to be able to get "all" of the Louisville TV stations, but WBNA may have been one I never did get. That, and Channel 24.

Definitely. I live 50+/- miles from the closest broadcaster in Atlanta and that's the closest. I played around with indoor antennas a bit but am
hesitant to sink money into a nice outdoor antenna.

I'll stick with Amazon, Hulu and Netflix for the time being. If there's something I REALLY want to watch, I'm not a big proponent of illegally downloading shows as I want to discourage that behavior in my children but...

you don't need to sink a whole lot if you already have some parts... contact me

in private for plans for a turnstyle antenna that is easy to build... you only need height to receive the most stations available in your area... if you are in a valley, you will be limited since line-of-sight is needed...

Heh. Something like that. Funny as I get older though I'm less and less
likely to do it and only then if it's the only availability. I pay a little extra for instance on top of my Prime subscription so that I can watch Doctor Who and The Walking Dead the day after they are aired. Still cheaper than
    cable in the long run.

Me also. I am around the 50 +/- distance and have got the distinct
impression that an outdoor antenna may not be enough. Once the "local" broadcasters went digital, most really lowered their power ratings.

Between that at all the hills locally, you pretty much have to have cable to get "local" TV. Supposedly, this area had one of the very first (if not the first) cable TV "companies." One neighbor set up an antenna high enough to pull in the distant broadcasts, and then offered to let other neighbors hook
up to it. It eventually became a municipal utility.

I didn't mean a Actor, I meant the Graphics in the background when the Title and Credits are shown at the beginning and end of the Third Doctor Who shows.

Saturday, I called WDRB and left a message that I was seeing a show that is being shown on their 21.1 channel, on the 21.4 channel at the time Doctor Who was listed in their schedule on their website.
I suppose someone flipped the wrong switch in the Control Room at the station.

The bad thing is the american transmissions eliminate some footage to insert commercials. The original Broadcats were commercial free.
