I just noticed that, at least in Mystic A49 on Linux, if one postpones ("Save as Draft") a reply to an echomail message, the REPLY kludge is not included when (later) sending the message ("Save Message").

Perhaps something with the temporary storage of the message?

I had two gripes with Mystic, these are my humble opinions:
a) it tried to be everything - BBS, Mailer, Tosser/Packer, Scheduler... etc. Would have been much better to just be the BBS.
b) Not open source; this is minor in the grand scheme if the developers support the product actively, but if said developers decide to abandon the project - I would have liked them to make arrangements to "pass the torch" as it where.

Yes, that could be true. I guess including it all in one package is a good way to get things up and running easier than otherwise. It is possible, though, to replace some parts if you wish to -- I chose to use binkd and ifcico as mailers, but Mystic as tosser and BBS, for example.

Yes, it does make the product more vulnerable over time. I believe, though, that some earlier version of Mystic actually *was* released as open source, but that it mostly resulted in other people rebranding it, claiming it to be their own work, and probably not contributing much to its development, which surely must have annoyed (and saddened) g00r00 after putting so much effort into it over the years...

You can enable/disable each and every one of those things you listed, and turn it into "just a BBS" if you want to. All of those features were requested by many sysops over the years, and were also alpha and beta tested by many (probably less than the first mention of the many that requested them) for years after they were added.

IIRC, he tried open sourcing it quite some time ago (over a decade now, probably), which led to a lot more problems than he cared to deal with, so he closed it back up. It's been his work, and only his work for over 30 years. I highly doubt he is going to pass the torch unless/until he is completely done with it.

If you don't agree with how he manages his own software, there are other open source BBS software projects - maybe even ones that don't have the features you don't seem to like - out there for you to get involved with.

Unfortunately, due to work, he disappears quite frequently. The old Timers
will remember I believe pre-alpha a39 was around for a couple of years before he updated it. Then he was busy updating it going through A40-A48 in a couple of years time. The latest A49 is a pre-alpha and is known to have many bugs in it. Unfortunately, as you see he is away again I believe he said right after A49 was made available it had a lot of issues. If you want to give Mystic another shot, install A48. I have been running it for probably 2 years now, and it runs fine.

I am not sticking up for g00r00 here, I agree a couple of competent
programmers along with him could get updates done much quicker, but unfortunately this leads to more issues.. If anyone knows the old Commodore 128 version of C-Net BBS, they will know there has been around 8 different programmers who worked on it, todays version from 2016 is a total disaster! If it was one programmer then there would be a lot less issues. Image BBS for the C64 was done by 6 different programmers, 4 of them programmed it together for the most part, and 2 worked and left relatively quickly so it's been the same programmers since 1994. I was one of them, and still am one of them.

He'll be back (he pops his head into Araknet, and here every few months taking notes on what needs to be done)... Good luck with the software you are choosing to run, the rest that are out there are really good also. I have run Synchronet, and Enigma and both of them are top notch..

Thank you for confirming what I had observed. I by no means wish to disparage Mystic or G00r00. He has written an amazing BBS system. I only hope that one of the take-aways he makes note of is to 'train' another developer or two that can help him continue to develop Mystic in a way that he'll be happy with. Frankly, if he netmailed me today giving me access to the source, but I am only to make bug and security fixes; I'd jump on it to see this fine product continue.

No need to be sorry for a complete answer. I appreciated it. I also appreciate the time you took writing, and the tone of your message - polite and factual. I have received a few replies that take the attitude of "Mystic is the best thing in the world since sliced bread, how dare you dis our stuff!" (I paraphrase, but yeah, like that.) And I do believe Mystic is the best; that's why I choose it several years ago; but it does not mean it can not get even better. I sincerely hope it does.

And I am sorry for my ranting. You can imagine that I am a bit upset with the thought of having to change the BBS, again, after the tons of hours put into it -- thus, the idea of a web app which would leave the Mystic setup as the 'Classic' BBS and the web app as the 'new' BBS. I have to agree, I ran a BBS back in the 80's and 90's and got the bug again in 2018. I tried a few softwares setting them up, and after being away from software for almost 25 years, I was shocked at how difficult some were to set up. Nothing bad just my ignorance. Then I came upon Mystic, it set up in minutes and I had a full BBS set up and running. Over the next several months, I changed things as I learned how to modify this BBS software (I was one of the programmers of Image BBS v2.0 for the Commodore 64 and am one of the current programmers of v3.0 so I wanted something that made modifying simple). This software was just that. Over the years I have done some things with it, and still want to do more. Nothing wrong with writing a clone of Mystic. I created a Theme for Mystic of my Image BBS software. :)

For the hell of it, got back to Mystic A48, that was the last stable version, you might find your issues go away. g00r00 always puts the most stable version on the regular Mystic website, the pre-alphas are test boards, I ran up that tree for a while about 3 years ago, upgrading to each new pre-alpha and sometimes running into issues. I stopped when A46 was released and only started using the most stable versions. I am happy with A48. Everything you have on your BBS will run fine on A48, if you are in a VM clone it and then install A48 over your A49 run the update tools, and see how it runs. You might be happy with the results..
