Despite this I still will default to the tv episode simply because
of the cheesie el-cheapo special effects.

By today's standards, but for the mid-60s, they were considered quite good, especially for a TV show with limited budget and time.

Also it took less than an hour to resolve what took the movie more than an hour of overdone graphics for more or less the same plot.

You can hardly compare the two formats. Movies have more time and more budget to tell one story while episodic TV of that time had to crank
out a new story every week.

I have a feeling Maurice was reflecting on how boring that first movie was. As a fan of ST for over 40 years, I enjoyed the movie, it had some great and memorable scenes, and I've seen it at least 5 times. As for my negative feedback about it, I couldn't really say more than some of the existing broad criticisms of that particular film state. I'll summarize by stating my opinion that it had some scenes that were too "extended" for my tastes... Spock's journey into V'Ger being the most prominent.

The other popular criticism is the recycled plot that Maurice touched on. I seem to recall someone, somewhere had written that it combined the plots from three different episodes.

Besides "The Changeling", the other episode in which a parallel exists is "The Immunity Syndrome". I can't think of any more than that myself though.
