That is a ncurses compatibility issue. golded probably requires ncurses-5 which has become obsolete as of late. See https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/chapter08/ncurses.html for an excellent schpiel on how to potentially fix it.

Yes, I have run into it before with XPoint I think it was. XPoint didn't like my slackware but it might like gentoo better. There was/is some kind of workaround for that but I forget what it is.

There is a new LFS book out a few months ago. I've been reading it and pondering converting the BBS machine to LFS. I bet golded would run fine on that.

Gentoo builds ncurses with a "tinfo" use flag. That is not a generally used flag and I am not sure if I can or should disable it.

    Out of interest I have a Raspberry pi3B+ and a Pi4 8Gb.
I have bullseye 32 bit on the 3 and had Bullseye 64 bit on the 4.

Built and use golded on the 3 - no problems but for the 64 bit it would compile
abet a lot of warning messages but would not run.

Installed Ubuntu 22.04.1 on the 4 and rebuilt Golded, again with warning msgs but again it will not run just comes back immediately.

It is beginning to seriously annoy me.

The rest of Ubuntu seems ok although it is a very basic gui - may be a limited Gnome build but have not yet attempted to find out what exactly it is.

Oh, both 32 and 64 versions originally compiled using gcc but with the very large number of warning messages for both, I redid it using clang with `export CC=clang` preceding the make resulting in less messages but are different warnings regarding pragma's.

If the developers must insist of using -Wall for the compiles they really should make sure that in compiles cleanly !

One trick I have not yet tried is to copy the executable from 32 bit to the pi4
and see if it runs there.

Until we're sure what the real issue is I'd leave it alone. LFS doesn't but if it turns out to need it then adding "--with-termlib=tinfo" might make all the difference. That is what slackware does when building it's ncurses-6.3 libs and apps.

Yes, I see that too. GoldED was written years ago. It probably compiled warning free on gcc 2.95!

With each new gcc version there seems to be more warnings. It's worriesome.

Installed Ubuntu 22.04.1 on the 4 and rebuilt Golded, again with warning msgs but again it will not run just comes back immediately.

Yep, these new compilers are fine with new code but older software may suffer if it's not maintained.

One trick I have not yet tried is to copy the executable from 32 bit to the pi4 and see if it runs there.

Does the pi4 support 32bit software? If so that might work. I have a copy of golded built on slackware that I keep in a safe place in case it's needed.

I tried it just to see and I can't disable the tinfo keyword in gentoo, it completely disregards my wishes. Looking at "--with-termlib=tinfo" looks like slackware and gentoo are building ncurses the same way. There must be a different issue.

Same thing here on the chroot partition. I need to do a tad more research on this but offhand I am thinking libtinfo is a bust given that it compiles fine without it.

I think it wants "termname" or "tinfo" on the command line, but I

It's a linking problem with libtinfo. More research may be required depending on whether or not this is even an issue.

Definetly not for two very good reasons; no amiga hardware and no such thing as latin-1.

Nope. We have no use for things that do not exist, such as latin-1. Personally I vote for 7-bit ascii characters and to hell with stinkin' human languages.

    Hey Benny!

    please dont fix msged then

No problem. Same with golded. There was never a plan to fix either of them since they are more DOS-think then the idea I went with vim and utf-8. I can even get 8-bit eharacter sets working using the proper, standardized character sets without altering a thing ... other than some bash scripts that is.

    in fidoterms latin-1 does exists

What is it then and why are some fido sysops using CP1252 while flying the LATIN-1 flag. This is assuming that LATIN-1 is indeed ISO-8859-1 which it isn't. According to IANA it is LATIN1.

    in iconv it does not

That is because the glibc people decided to follow reality. There is no LATIN-1. It simply doesn't exist.

i dont have references to why amiga did it, more or less maybe
filesystem was build with latin-1 in mind

Or they just didn't do their homework and followed the DOS-think crowd while they merrily skipped their way into obscurity.

If you have a keymap for Amiga's co-called LATIN-1 that will tell the tale. I've never had anything to do with anything Amiga ever, but I am willing to guess it's really LATIN1 (ISO-8859-1).

feel free to not get an amiga emulator on linux

No worries. If I do emulate anything it would be a Linux BBS based on busybox, gcc-4 and friends. It didn't have utf-8 working though.

    Life is good,
    Maurice

would not help have full fleged utf8 when old precompiled amiga
    software only have latin-1

Definetly not for two very good reasons; no amiga hardware and no such thing as latin-1.

please dont fix msged then, if anything should be changed you should in vim make valid w3.org text (HTML) :)

if people understand why its not happend we could all use latin-1
Nope. We have no use for things that do not exist, such as latin-1. Personally I vote for 7-bit ascii characters and to hell with stinkin' human languages.

A bunch of heathen bastards if you ask me. :-)

    don't blame me then

    Out of interest I have a Raspberry pi3B+ and a Pi4 8Gb.
I have bullseye 32 bit on the 3 and had Bullseye 64 bit on the 4.

I just built golded-plus on lfs (very minimal) without issues.

Installed Ubuntu 22.04.1 on the 4 and rebuilt Golded, again with warning msgs but again it will not run just comes back immediately.

Is it finding your golded.cfg? I "export GOLDED=/usr/local/etc" where my golded.cfg is and it works well for me.

If I forget that export that's what happens, golded just doesn't run, it returns you to the command prompt.
