  • fibre experience, anyone?

    Anyone here have techinal insights and experience about fibre
    installations?

    I was scheduled to have a fibre installation the other day.
    First, the tech was given the wrong address. After that was
    rectified, he told me that he was told that my building "didn't
    qualify", even though we could see spare loops of fibre cable
    on some nearby poles, *and* there were even two spare ports on
    the terminal. My neighbor had a fibre feed to his building, no
    problem.

    When I asked what "didn't qualify" meant, all he could tell me
    was that first there wasn't any "assignment" for my address -
    which was later corrected - but something else is behind the
    "didn't qualify". As a tech installer, he had no idea what is
    behind those classifications. With two spare "unassigned"
    ports, that seemed strange to the tech. He was simply told
    that they weren't available to use.

    I am sure the rules vary wildly between providers and locations but, assuming this is a PON based service, it's possible that they would have a rule to leave one port free on each splitter to move a customer onto in case of a fault? Splitters don't tend to go faulty but you never know.

    Some providers will also leave a reflector on one port of each splitter to allow them to run OTDR tests, again not all that common but who knows?

    I'd have thought the installer would know about either of these cases, though, so my best guess would be admin error :)

    I have no idea what the issue was, but I called for the status
    of the installation yeasterday, and I got an installation
    today.

    The feed is from a completely different direction.

    And.. unfortunately, the entry point is at the back of my
    building instead of the front where access to my existing wired
    network would be best. The installer just used an old plugged
    up hole that used to be for the oil tank. Instead, I only have
    a sole Deco x50 pod unit to work with - provided by the ISP.
    If I had another Deco pod then it would be easier to reach the
    location of my desktop and its locally wired devices.

    Now, I am wondering if I can rig up a spare router to talk wifi
    with the Deco so that I can can simply plug my network into
    that router. Seems like I would need another Deco x50, or any
    other router that has WDS (wireless distribution system).
