MultiMail is the closest you can get to the actual Blue Wave reader. The reader was never an opensource project so there is no updating it unfortunately.

MultiMail 0.51 was released in April of this year.

As Alan said, MultiMail is the only way to go for Linux these days and I'd assume Mac also.

I have successfully run Blue Wave using both DOSbox and DOSemu under Slackware 64 Linux 14.2 but most of the time it's faster to just use MultiMail since Qodem, my preferred terminal program under Linux, calls MM natively.

I already got it down and I am having a look.
Now I need to figure out how to setup my Synchronet BBS serving the Fidonet mail as QWK packages and how to download it! as this is the offline reader, so I might need a few more things...

You can download QWK packets from your own synchronet BBS, or most any BBS you like. On a synchronet BBS hit Q from the main menu to go to the QWK menu. Select the areas you want to download (and move pointers back if you want to download messages you have already seen, if you want). Download your packet and read and reply from BW or MultiMail and when your done log onto the BBS, hit Q for the QWK menu and upload your reply packet, QWKID.rep.

The process is much the same (but may be slightly different) from any BBS that supports QWK.

That would be a dream for me as well - I have a Chromebook here that is
not compatible with Android apps, and would work like a charm for reading QWK/BW packages or even running a point system.

It does run under linux. On my 64 bit linux I have problems with pkunzip.
DPMI is no longer supported (in a 64 bit OS, I think) so I have to remember

It works well and has been maintained and supported for a long time now.
It's handy for me on linux.. no unzip or pkunzip issues.. :)

There is another dos emulator that I like better than DosBox. It is
called vDOS, a link to info and download page is: https://www.vdos.info/download.html

DosBox was mainly written to support games. The program vDos has some
other features which I find nice, e.g. you can configure it to print
something.

It is worth mentioning that both DOSBOX and vDOS have BlueWave
exhibiting two problems that it does not show when run in a 32-bit
environment.

One of these is minor and cannto (to my knowledge) be fixed. That is
that when BW is run in its usual environment, it does not alter the
date/time stamp of the QWK file. In fact it uses that fact to help
display the files and their read/personal info in the listing of QWK
files. When run with either DOS emulator, the date/time stamp is
changed -- presumably because they detect that the file has been touched
and changed.

The second one is more serious, but a fix has been issued. There is a
fairly long discussion on the forum Vogons about this. The solution is
given in the post as quoted below, but you will probably need to go to
that forum to get the link to the fix.

a filespec with an extension of XTI* it will override with an error code
3 result. Run BWAVEFIX.COM from the BWAVE folder; it runs BWAVE.EXE as a
child program. The child exit errorlevel is reflected through the
parent, and the parent command line is given to the child, so the
program is friendly to batch files. Assembler source code is included in
the attached archive.

I really do not know. I am using the first fix, which is a replacement
for the exe file. I don't even know if the OS/2 version had the Y2K
problem, nor whether or not the second fix (my bwrepfix, which is really
a bandaid) would work if it did. What that fix does is to put a batch
file around the Bwave program to intercept the call to packing up the
REP file and repair the defective file.

I think it was working when Slackware 14.2 was released. It stopped working here recently because something (I don't remember the details) was removed from the kernel, for security reasons.

There is a command line switch for pkunzip to disable DPMI, "-)" I think but haven't tried that yet.
