Just wondering if any of you out there in BBS land remember the good old Yugo.

I fix up old and odd ball cars to pass time over the winter months. As a mechanic I try and find cars that I don't see or work on in my day to day life.
A few years back it was a VW Rabbit, Then an datsun 610, this year its a 1988 Yugo GV.
I found it a few hours away in need of some serious work, and decided the time was right to see for myself if the Yugo really was the worst car ever built.
I'm about 70% back together with it, and I can tell you already... IT IS NOT!
It its a funky little car with the bare essentials needed to function.

If I had to critisize it for anything it would be that they decided to use old school vacum switching valves to control everything in 1988! This car sould have had an o2 sensor, ect, map sensor, and at least a electronicly controled carb if not fuel injection.
But to save money they installed one heck of a convoluted air pump/egr/thrmostatic control system that looks like it was thought up by a grade schooler.

Still it seems well built, and for a 30 year old car its in good overall shape.

So any former Yugo owners out there? Any first or second hand stories to share?

Next year I was thinking about tracking down a Dihatsu charade, another rare
flop.

I remember them very well. They remind me of the modern day Smart Car (in size).

I will say that I think it is cool that some people keep and restore some rare non-collectable cars.

Not that long ago I saw an old "Family Truckster" stationwagon on the highway from the 1970s. It was in great shape, complete with the fake woodgrain and all. It was just neat to see it on the road and in great shape.. :)

It was popular here in West Berlin for a short time in my youth. But then, after Germany's reunification, these cars became pointless because you could suddenly buy a Trabant for 1 symbolic Deutschmark, with almost infinite supply in cheap spare parts, or spare cars. :-D The estate versions had actually a bit
of space, and for a 26hp engine, it had good low end torque, being a 2 stroke. Powered AND lubricated by a gasoline-oil mix, like a chainsaw, the noise and odour it emitted at a quick start from a traffic light is hardly rivalled by anything that would drive on a street. ;-D
When we were in East Berlin for the first time, still before reunification, the
whole city smelt like 2 stroke exhaust gas.

The last time ever that I saw a Yugo standing around was probably 15 years ago. Im the most popular online car sales marketplace in Germany, only 1 Yugo is listed for sale - a 1993 model for the East European market, imported by a collector. So, there's really not much left of it. ;-) In comparison, there are
280 Trabant for sale....

Just passing thru after a long absence. I well remember the Yugo and it
WAS closest to the worst car ever imported as my daughters husband bought
one.
But I did not expect much else as it was Russian Copy of a Fiat and they
made some very bad cars on their own for the common man.

I remember people complaining about them but they were never the owners. :)

Those old Fiat designs weren't bad - I went to high school in sunny California where rust wasn't a problem, and there were a bunch of Fiat 128 coupes, sports, and X1/9s around. It seemed like the electrics were more of a problem than the engines.

I'd always liked boxy, fast cars -- wanted to get a Fiat 128, put an air dam on it, throw a weber carb on it, campagnolo mags, stickier tires... but I was in a school full of Camaros and Chevelles.

Back then, I had a Fiat 850 Spyder - convertible, rear-engine 903cc pushrod 4 cylinder. 0-60 in 18.9 seconds.

Veglia Borletti, a rung above Lucas, but no Bosch or DELCO.

I had a friend in high school with a TR-6, and her alternator died. She had the choice of another Lucas alternator or a DELCO alternator for 2/3s of the price and she picked the Lucas. That one failed in a year.

Many many moons ago when i was young and single i has a 1973 Jaguar XJ12 Sedan.. Worked all day waxing and detailing it for Friday night. It never failed to lose it's lights or the air conditioning quit..

Ended up trading it in for a Corvette :) Damn Lucas!!

Everyone I knew who loved Jags had 3 of them - I assumed it was because they ran a third of the time.

My cousin is a mechanic, mostly works on German and Japanese cars. He got a "Mechanic's Special" E-type 2+2 he was working on and he said it was a whole different world from german cars. Don't know if he had the V12, but it did have a lot of carbs. :)
