I actually wound up in Fido back when Fido was first formed! Still have
original floppy disks for it! Radio and phone line stuff was all thereason
for the season back then! I got my orignal WN5WQN ham radio novice license here in the USA back in 1952 at 13 years of age. Upgraded immediately to General Class and then when the original Extra Class USA ham license was created, I was, so told me, the yougest kid ever to get one. As toFido, tha
was back in the days of 300 Baud then 1000 Baud modems before there waseven
any Internet. Phone hobbiest? Well, that was also the days when even a 20 mile away telephone call from my College Station, Texas, to Navasota,orIola
Madisonville or say 25 miles away was a LONG DISTANCE CALL.your
As well the telco charged you for even the call if nobody even answered
outbound call! Back in the days of Sroweger Switch mechanical rotaryswitch
operations that changed your outbound calls to the digital hard wiretelepho
line which connected your phone to whomever. Including multiple user phone connections on non-private lines!eve
So, at that time, in that my only real interest in the whole radio mess was Morse Code connections and the new 'digital' mode data for Fido was sort of extension for that stuff, I had a very then unpopular telco known interest use ham radio to bypass the telco mpney making game!
It got worse. Back then I got that long later, even using a HeathKit H89 computer inside my pickup truck to do mobile phone connections which had
then morphed to voice connections to bypass el telco companies! It gotwors
Back then, Fido Net 117 here in College Station, because of the close connection to Texas A&M College was even MUCH bigger than Fido Net 106 of Houston. The pressure got worse and worse on how anyone was ever going to contemplate making what Fido Net could even do to carry EVERYONE in theworl
up with less cost to telco one, telco two, or even telco Australia incontac
with telco USA whomever! International call costs were HUGE back then.nee
And back then I was NOT AT ALL part of the Fido boss operations here in Aggieland. Even for Fido contacts for just 25 mile away towns that were
for data this and data that. It developed that the only way to generateenou
money to play this game, the way it had to be done, was to pay for the connection costs, for practical purposes, with pornography! Which Iguarante
you would NOT be worth a flip over ham radio short wave communicationswhere
anyone could snoop on what was being sent from this or that to whom or whatever! Plus who cares if it was encrypted back then! Money is money!Pa
for peep - whatever! Oddly, the normal Fido network was at least not here, used for this. Just the equipment with other than Fido nodelist stuff.Eas
to figure that vector out. But I and most of my Fido doggie freinds had NOTHING to do with this.he
Anyway, Fido had LOTS of legal snoop and whatever issues with the law enforcement folks over this. Plus the telco folks were not happy with the of revenue as well. Even by the mid-1960s I was a very high up commercial aircraft pilot and instrument flight instructor out at Easterwood Airport
at Texas A&M University. A very good Fido friend from a town about 30miles
from here who was commercially doing oil field work at sites all overnearby
states and even further and who was using automatic daily telephone paging Net 117 here, wound up on a two week oil field cleanup site job. When hego
home at the end of his two week run, he discovered that his Fido BBS wasjam
and calling a site NOT AT ALL INVOLVED in any of this porno stuff over and again, 24 hous a day! He re-booted it again and problem solved. Notquite!
He got a $1,200 plus bill from his telco for long distance calls that were NEVER COMPLETED! And they REFUSED to wipe the bill which they forced himto
pay! No more Fido for him and I sure understood why!loc
We won't go into all the telco furor and telco user furor this and other
phone vs. radio and data relationship that erupted into over all of thisbac
then. Plus, at that time, local and Texas state law enforcementallegations
whomever was ALSO responsible for any of this mess and their claim that IF CAN'T PROVE YOU ARE NOT INVOLVED YOU ARE GUILTY! Even if what they claimed true and ABSOLUTELY FALSE!ev
Well, turns out that radio and phone technical capability, paired up with
at time computer data storage and absolute proof of the whole thing butonly
with ABSOLUTE GLOBAL VARIABLE PROGRAMMING and *NOT EVER* any sort of whatis
now an API or whatever, is still totally needed even today for proving innocence. But virtually nobody will agree with that. Oh well. And whatwa
your message?porch
Anyway, they threw all the Fido Net 117 hardware and stuff on my front
the middle of one night! Plus visits from all kinds of law enforecment'fol
that knew I could prove I had NOTHING to do with their 'cure' for all this. Which I have complied completely with for what, about 4 decades now?
Amazing how the Fido Doggie still barks and is so important! Chuckle!
