because my processor is blacklisted even though it meets the requirements. i was too lazy to change my processor and now so much
time has passed i'll just get a new desktop computer eventually.
I've bought several Dell 7050 and 3050 machines off of eBay that the processors are one generation too old. But if I turn on TPM 2.0 in
the bios, I can install a fresh copy of Windows 11 Pro and they run
without issue. They won't update from Windows 10, but they will
accept a fresh install. May be worth buying a new SSD and giving
it a try.

problem is its not easy. It needs to be dumbed down so a sixth grader can use it. I wanted to use linux to run my bbs, but im a slave to windows or i will need to get a os/2 licence and run EleBBS and fmail/2.What about a Linux distro? I feel like that might be even less evil.

Seems to me that could be a good learning experience..? You could install Linux in a VM to play with it and learn before setting up your BBS on it.

i used to pick up things super quick. now that i'm an old man it's harder.
i have been drug free and dont drink much. infact i started drinking when i
was 35. i think this happened because of covid. there's little differences in everything about me now.
Unfortunately, Altzheimer's runs in my family. My 93 yr old mother does not even know who I am anymore... this worries me for the future.

But I am still going to try to get the wife and myself on Linux as soon
as I retire and don't have to use Windows for my job. I have already
put Mint on her old laptop so she can start getting ready... if I give
her all her tools, she should be ok after a slight learning curve. I
need to get M$oft out of my life permanently.
Windows includes Linux now, so there's really a very low barrier to entry (cost-wise, at least).
And that's about the best thing you can say about WinLinux. I've played with it and it was more frustrating than Arch or Gentoo.

Well, Jethro, you might want to come out of that shack in the hills
and take a look around. The Linux landscape has changed quite a
bit. In fact, there's a distro just for sixth-graders liike you.
It's called Zorin OS. It's a distro that closely mimics Windows
10/11, without all the MS gunk.

Or would you just rather boot into something similar to Windows and
have everything done for you via mouse click? Then I could see the argument. *shrug*

It's not that I'm that much of MSFT hater but it's cool when regular computer users try to adopt Linux and stay comprehensive about it. I
keep my fingers crossed.
It seems "the internet" is upset with MS about their new requirement
to disallow windows 11 on entirely local machines (ie. without
accounts on live.com, full time internet access, ads etc).

I've been distro hopping for a few months now. I have tried arch btw ;0
Currently my desktop is running Linux Mint. It's been stable, the box
runs Jellyfin for our media, and other then that it's my gaming rig.
This laptop is currently dual booting Fedora and Win11. The win11
install is for BBS stuff (Until I get off my ass and configure HPT).
I think I'll be going all in with Fedora on both the machines as for me
it is working great and I wanted to go back to KDE for the desktop as
it's the one I prefer.
My arch review was pretty simple. As you said it was not hard to
install, it was fast etc. I don't have anything bad to say, I just
didn't like the pacman command lines. Yes that's a crazy reason to move
to another distro, but at this point in my life I want to at least like using my own computers. (At work for 8 hours a day I'm stuck with a
highly locked down windows 11).
I think it might be time to have some work/play separation and install
Linux at home. :)
Unfortunately, Altzheimer's runs in my family. My 93 yr old mother does not even know who I am anymore... this worries me for the future.
That's sad. :( Sorry to hear.

I wonder how one upgrades to Win 11 for a machine that doesn't
have full time internet access, since it requires it?
