• Brew Software, what if hop varieties are missing?

    From Joerg@news@analogconsultants.com to rec.crafts.brewing on Mon Oct 8 14:09:43 2018
    From Newsgroup: rec.crafts.brewing

Trying out BrewTarget software I found that some stuff is missing in the ingredients line-up. For example, I sometimes use Calypso and Mosaic
hops and would like to try my own recipe with those or other hops in a
week. It seems there is no way to add hops to the line-up.

I could substitute the fairly similar Simcoe for the Mosaic just for the software to run but that starts to deviate a bit much. How do the brew software users among you handle such situations?

I'm a long time user of Brewtarget, so I went to look, and it took me a

Yes you can add new hops varieties to the Hop Database. Here's How:

    1) Open the Hop Database by View->Hops, Ctl-H, or clicking the leaf icon
    (You knew this)

    2) You should see buttons at the bottom of that window for 'Add To
Recipe', 'New', an edit icon, and a minus sign for deleting an entry.
'New' is what you want. Should be easy from there.

When I fired up Brewtarget to check this, I (of course) immediately
opened the Hop Database, and I could swear that 'New' button wasn't
there. "Huh", I said to myself, "he's right. That's weird".

So I closed the Hop Database window and opened the Fermentables Database,
and the 'New' Button was there as I'd expected. I then went back to look
at the Hop Database Window, and the 'New' button was there too. After
exiting and restarting BrewTarget, the Hop Database 'New' button shows up right away.

Now I'm not sure if I just didn't see the 'New' button the first time
because I'm getting old and my mind is slipping, or if there's a bug I
need to report. You may wish to try opening another window and seeing if
    that works for you.

I've tried and even after closing and re-opening several times there are
no buttons on the bottom of the hop window. There are only three at the
top, name, type and use. Those are just topic lines, not real buttons
since I can't change anything there.

I downloaded and installed the software yesterday so it should be the
    latest edition.

    Fermentables doesn't have "New" either.

I just installed the latest BrewTarget 2.3.0 for the first time on a
given machine and the New button was there at the bottom of the Hop
window. Adding & deleting a hop entry worked fine. I'm running
    Windows 7.

I am also using 2.3.0 on a Windows 7 Pro machine yet the "New" button
    ain't there :-(

It isn't there under any of the ingredients tabs. With some CAD software
where such functions are missing it is possible to hack directly into
the database directory for the respective tab but I haven't tried that yet.

With ProMash, I'd just clone an existing entry and change the name along
with the other parameters. I used to clone entries just to account for differing levels of bitterness between different lots of the same hop.

You should be able to do something similar with other software.

Not with Brewtarget. So far it seems that it stores its ingredients and probably everything else in an SQLite database file. Hacking that sort
of stuff is beyond my software skills.

The only scroll bar is in the ingredients window and scrolling up and
down reveals nothing other than borders. It looks like the screen shot
on their main page and this doesn't change when scrolling:

The three topic lines "name type use" are in the window you get in the

What he's saying is to open the hop database, which is separate.

Ctrl H gives you a new window with topic headers

    That's where the buttons are.

Aha, thanks! That where it hides. Now I can add Calypso and Mosaic. Just
in time because I want to brew a beer with those in a week.
