About the Author
A cultural critic, an intellectual, and a feminist writer, bell hooks is best known for classic books including Ain’t I a Woman, Bone Black, All About Love, Rock My Soul, Belonging, We Real Cool, Where We Stand, Teaching to Transgress, Teaching Community, Outlaw Culture, and Reel to Real. hooks is Distinguished Professor in Residence in Appalachian Studies at Berea College, and resides in her home state of Kentucky.

Title: Great book for those who are staring to feel the mental fatigue of working in PWI's and more!

Review: I was recommended this book by a therapist and finally got a round to reading it and felt so affirmed as it delved into the struggles of working as Black women in PWI's and I work in Tech. As well as the glass ceilings placed upon us in family dynamics and so forth which I have all been privy to due to breaking away from it all. With that said, I still have yet to finish it as I felt that although it is reaffirming. I am currently at the stage where I know the information shared here already and am able to apply appropriate terms, express them well, and most importantly speak out against them while not giving into any gaslighting that ensues once one does.
This book will be great for those who are in the beginning stages of understanding what Black women go through and want to understand the difference between " surviving and thriving" what they have been unnecessarily enduring due to conditioning from society or their cultures. Especially if you come from a west indies culture.
The book talks about the importance of having community with other black women to the point where it comes across as if one who has no community can never be healed or successful. I don't like that at all as it can make those who do not have it feel as if they are less than.
A good book but leave what doesn't serve you. I may or may not finish it due to the continued emphasis on the community aspect.

Review: I have never read a book or known an author to so accurately explain the black women’s experience in America like Bell Hooks does in “Sisters of the Yam.” Many friends and associates raves about this book and with good reason. Bell Hooks talks about the collective ideaology that many black women grow up with as children and how it relates and shapes us as adults. She talks about our often times suppressed sexuality. She give insight into our need for healing. It is a great book. I would recommend this book for any and every black woman and those who hope to understand us.
