• ftelnet and personal proxy?

From Martin Kazmaier@1:340/1101 to All on Sun May 14 11:07:00 2023
I'd love to run ftelnet with ftelnetproxy and https, but can't find any documentation on how to do this. Setting up http seems easy enough, but I'd like to have a secure connection to a proxy running on my local system, then telnet through in my local network to the bbs. I'd love to see a working example of ftelnet widget settings and ftelnetproxy.ini settings under
    Windows.

Thanks! I've been trying to contact Rick Parrish for assistance with this by sending contact messages via the ftelnet web page, but haven't heard from him yet so I was really hoping someone with this working could be of assistance.

I've got it set up following the instructions on the ftelnet website along with grabbing the code generated by his form. You will need an SSL certificate on both the web server and the proxy server, and a self-signed one did not work for me. Had to get one from letsencrypt. At the moment I am connected from a MacSE so it's not very easy to get access to my configs to paste here. If you want, email me on my board and I can try to help. It's at penisys.online:6502, or you can see the ftelnet client at https://penisys.online

I followed the instructions and your suggestions without any more success
than I'd previously had. I followed Ioram Sette's suggestion and installed Websockify. That worked great and supported the SSL certificate. Now everything except for ftelnet itself is run internally through SSL. I'm sure people will feel a lot more comfortable now, if they care about their BBS traffic being sniffed (which is rather unlikely to happen, or cause anything
to be concerned about if it were to occur).

This topic comes up every few years or so and sometimes ends up a wildly silly debate on the secure-factor... for a technology never designed for it.

If someone wants to jump through hoops to get SSL working for a BBS thats
fine, but no caller I've ever encountered in 30+ years ever cared about the encryption of the connection.

Yeah, I don't know why I had so much trouble with the proxy. Websockify
works great, though and was a lot easier to setup.

Nice, glad you were able to get it working. I'll check out what Websockify is.
