    Hello All!

The world-famous ARJ archiver, known for its unsurpassed flexibility,
is now available in the open-source implementation. While being 100%
compatible with the original archiver from Robert Jung, this
long-awaited version adds support for OS/2, Linux and FreeBSD systems
along with a broad range of platform-specific options: upport for
extended attributes, links, file permissions/ownership and
    cross-platform interoperability.

For a brief practical introduction of the open-source ARJ, be sure to
visit the project pages at SourceForge:

    http://arj.sourceforge.net
    http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/arj

The first page also contains some links to the binary snapshots of our
latest (and last) closed-source releases with the "free for personal
use" policy. When downloading these files, be sure to use "binary"
mode as they are SFX archives.

To obtain the source code, set up a CVS (Concurrent Versions System)
    client and perform a checkout:

    cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.arj.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/arj login
    cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.arj.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/arj co arj

You may also browse the ARJ source code via Web CVS as provided by
    SourceForge.

Within the several forthcoming weeks, the future directions of the
project will be decided. This will include changes and fixes to the
"stable" 2.78 release - most importantly, ports to other UNIX-like
platforms (currently, only IA32) beyond Linux and FreeBSD.

There are some opportunities for volunteers wishing to participate in documenting ARJ or translating it to national languages. The latter
was not paid with much attention since ARJ v 2.50a but now it's
    entirely up to the users.

    IMPORTANT GUIDELINES:

    1. To minimize the adverse impact on business course of ARJ Software,
Inc., the algorithms to generate ARJ-SECURITY envelopes,
SECURITY.KEY and REGISTER.DAT/ARJ.KEY files have been left out of
    the source code.

    2. For the same purpose, any attempt to pursue the creation of a
"compatible" implementation for the aforementioned algorithms will
be deprecated within this project (however the appearance of such
    algorithms could not be prevented).

LEGAL STATUS: The development of this project was governed by laws of
Russian Federation. The open-source release was made available under
the terms and conditions of GNU General Public License. ARJ Software
Russia is a non-profit group with no affiliation with ARJ Software, Inc.

    Sincerely yours - Andrew
